GCMA EMBARKS ON SANITATION AWARENESS CAMPAIGN

n the exercise of powers conferred on the Ga Central Municipal Assembly by section 181 of the Local Government Act 936 of the 1992 constitution, every house, business, institution etc. has the responsibility to clean their frontage including desilting of drains, weeding and sweeping. Also, all businesses and shop owners are required to clean their surroundings every morning before they start the day’s business.

With this, the Information Services Department (ISD) of the Ga Central Municipal Assembly has embarked on a public service announcement campaign with the cause to inform residents and business owners on the need to keep their environment clean.

This was to educate them on the need for full participation in the monthly clean-up exercises organized by the Assembly and also caution residents of sanctions to be meted out if they default against this directive.

The awareness campaigns which is key to the success of the monthly National Sanitation Day clean up exercises focus on different selected areas within the municipality as and when a community is targeted.

A four-day intensive announcement was made in the Olebu-Vicolis, Santa Maria-Jah Love, Anyaa-NIC-Market-Zonal council and Ablekuma curve areas prior to last month’s clean-up exercise.

The communication mediums used were the various information centres stationed across the municipality, radio broadcast, churches, mosques, markets and public gatherings for effective dissemination.

The Assembly, through the ISD will continue to educate and appeal to residents to observe the National Sanitation Day and participate in the clean-up exercises to help build a cleaner and healthier Ga Central.
