mission statement

T

o manage disaster by coordinating the resources of government institutions and Non-Governmental agencies and developing the capacity of communities to respond effectively to disaster and improve their livelihood through social mobilisation, employment generation and poverty reduction projects.

The National Disaster Management Organisation in Ga Central Municipal Assembly has been proactive since inception to ensure that the objectives and vision of the Organisation is realized. I.e. to enhance the capacity of society to prevent and Manage Disaster and to improve the livelihood of the poor and vulnerable in rural communities through effective disaster management, social mobilization, employment generation and poverty reduction.
The Organisation has its main Office at Sowutuom, GCMA and two other offices at Anyaa and Chantan Zonal Councils. Mr. Kwame Asare-Obeng is the Municipal NADMO Director.

NADMO’S ACTIVITIES for 2023

As part of the action plan for year 2023, we embarked on some activities to mitigate disaster. These include:

  1. Education & Sensitization Programs

    • Fire education in the schools, churches, mosques and market areas within the municipality was done from 1st of February 2023 to 3rd of March 2023. This is to educate pupils and students, market women and community members in general causes of fire outbreak and the preventive measures.

  1. Disaster & Emergencies

    • FLOOD – heavy down pour that occurred on the 7th of March, 2023 affected and damaged people’s properties and fence walls in areas such as Palas town, Borkorborkor, Anyaa lane 5 Vicolis area and Agape top.

    • FIRE – two (2) cases of fire disasters were recorded at Auntie Aku Dela Junction in a furniture factory and five(5) chamber and a hall building got burnt at Ablekuma – Agbaajena area in the municipality.

  1. Field Inspection

    • Identification of risk in the flood prone areas. These includes building on water ways, damaged culverts and foot bridges, silted streams/ rivers and drains respectively and this is as part of our preparedness towards the incoming rain. This exercise took place from the 20th of March to the 7th of April 2023. Inspection in areas such as Santa Maria, Auntie Aku, Sowutuom, Kwashiebu, Ablekuma – Olebu, Nii okaiman east, Nii okaiman west,  Lomnava, Agape, Anyaa west, Anyaa east, Awoshie, Ablekuma fan milk.

  1. Flood Education

    • Public education and awareness creation on flooding in the municipality was done from the 26th of April to the 31st of May 2023. The program was to increase residents awareness and understanding of flood related risks whiles improving flood preparedness during the rains. Education in areas such as Santa Maria, Auntie Aku, Sowutuom, Kwashiebu, Ablekuma – Olebu, Nii okaiman east, Nii okaiman west,  Lomnava, Agape, Anyaa west, Anyaa east, Awoshie, Ablekuma fan milk.

  1. Flood Shelters

    • Inspection and certification of flood shelters in the Municipality was done from Tuesday the 18th of April to Thursday the 20th of April 2023. A total of thirty eight (38) flood shelters were inspected with thirty five (35) being approved.

  1. Green Ghana Day and Tree Planting Exercise

    • Ga Central Municipal Assembly in collaboration with Ga Central NADMO , Forestry Commission and the Ministry of Education as part of the National Green Ghana Day under the theme “Greening Ghana for a Sustainable Future “ embarked on tree planting and seedlings distribution within the municipality. The program was held on the 9th of June at St. Justin School and ceremonial trees were planted by the Municipal Chief Executive and other dignitaries. One thousand, eight hundred and twenty four (1824) seedlings procured and distributed to various institutions and individuals within the municipality for planting.

  1. Disaster & Emergencies

    • FLOOD – heavy down pour that occurred on the 23rd of June, 2023 affected and damaged people’s properties and fence walls in areas such as Agape top, Borkorborkor, Anyaa lane 5 Vicolis area and Palas town.

    • FLOOD – Intense rainfall that occurred on the 22nd of September, 2023 affected and damaged both public and private infrastructure which included roads, bridges, buildings and utility systems. Some of the areas affected included Pentecost University area, Race Course, Rasta Junction, Rect Academy area, Family and Friends, Santa Maria Last Stop, Mary Lucy Hospital area, Palas Town, A-Lang, Abrantie, D/A school area, Lane 5, Future Link school area, Agape Top area, Pentecost Junction, Galilee area, Chantan Airport station, Commonwealth area, Six to Six area, AbenWaha, Scorpion down, Bankyeasse area and Living Spring area.

  1. Education & Sensitization Program

    • A public education on flooding in the Anyaa market was done on the 28th of September under the GARID project,  spear headed  by Developmental Planning. This was to educate the general Public and Market women on the effects of flooding and preventive measures.

    • A public education on flooding in some part of the Ablekuma electoral area was done  under the GARID project,  spear headed  by Developmental Planning. This was to educate the general Public on the effects of flooding and preventive measures.

  1. Safety Audit of Facilities

    • Inspection in Gas and Fuel stations in the municipality was done from the 12th of December to the 24th of December, 2023 to monitor and educate on the safety of their facilities. A total of thirty one (31) facilities where visited with eight (8) not being to standard and twenty three (23) being to standard.
