GA CENTRAL MUNICIPAL ASSEMBLY DISTRIBUTES ITEMS TO PERSONS LIVING WITH DISABILITIES

he Department of Social Welfare and Community Development of the Ga Central Municipal Assembly, headed by Madam Lydia Apaalah, has distributed income-generating tools and equipment to Persons Living with Disabilities (PWDs) in the municipality. The ceremony, which took place on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, had the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Emmanuel Adotey Allotey, Assembly members, traditional leaders, heads of departments and representatives of the Disability Council in attendance. This, is aimed to promote inclusion, equity, and empowerment for PWDs.


Items distributed include deep freezers, sewing machines, fufu pounding machines, plastics, barbering items and other trade-specific tools. These items are part of the 3% allocation from the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) for PWDs mandated to support their education, healthcare, and economic empowerment.
The representative from the National Council on Persons with Disability and Chairman of the Ga Central Municipal Assembly’s Disability Management Committee, Mr. Joshua Addy, in chairing the programme, highlighted the importance of having PWDs engage in meaningful jobs since they contribute to seven percent (7%) of Ghana’s GDP growth.
He advised them to use the equipment for the intended purposes so they can become self sufficient and be of great benefit to their families, community, municipality and the country as a whole.
Mr. Addy also cautioned them against misplaced priorities where profits made are used for other purposes rather than re-investing in their businesses for growth.


Addressing the gathering, the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Emmanuel Adotey Allotey, emphasized on government's commitment to disability inclusion and empowerment. He urged the beneficiaries to use the items for their intended purposes and let their work speak for them.
Hon. Allotey also pledged to continue championing the cause of disability inclusion and to monitor the progress of beneficiaries.
The event is part of a broader agenda to build a more inclusive Ga Central Municipality, where every citizen can thrive regardless of physical ability.
The government of H.E. John Dramani Mahama has shown commitment to disability-friendly policies, and the Municipal Assembly is working to implement programmes that support the empowerment of PWDs.
